Numerous international carriers have discontinued their Venezuela routes in response to a safety alert from the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This advisory warned airlines about a “potentially hazardous situation” regarding flights over Venezuelan airspace, spurring airlines to reassess their travel plans amidst rising safety concerns.
The warning coincides with escalating tensions between the United States and Venezuela, marked by increased military activities in the area. Flight tracking data reveals that airlines like Brazil’s Gol, Colombia’s Avianca, Chile’s LATAM, Caribbean Airlines from Trinidad and Tobago, and TAP Air Portugal from Portugal have suspended services from Caracas. Simon Bolivar Maiquetia International Airport’s official site has also acknowledged these cancellations.
The Colombian Aeronautica Civil provided a statement emphasizing the “potential hazards” of flying in the Maiquetia vicinity due to declining security conditions and a noticeable rise in military presence. TAP Air Portugal confirmed that its decision to cancel flights was influenced by communications from U.S. aviation authorities, who indicated that safety in Venezuelan airspace could not be assured.
The FAA’s advisory referenced a “deteriorating security environment and increased military presence” in and around Venezuela, outlining that these threats could endanger aircraft at any altitude. This situation has raised alarms among international airlines, resulting in significant flight cancellations and revised routes to circumvent the area.
Further context includes a substantial mobilization of U.S. military assets nearby, including the deployment of the largest aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy, various warships, and cutting-edge fighter jets like the F-35. Unnamed U.S. officials state that these strategies are part of a new operational phase concentrating on Venezuela, with covert operations aimed at the government of President Nicolás Maduro anticipated to commence soon.
Authorities have indicated that the U.S. administration will leverage all available means to halt drug trafficking and pursue accountability for those involved. This has intensified the prevailing tension and raised alarm regarding air safety over Venezuela.
The mixture of heightened military engagement, U.S. aviation safety warnings, and ongoing political strife has prompted several international airlines to cancel services to and from Venezuela. Passengers are encouraged to stay in touch with their airlines for the latest updates and possible modifications to their travel schedules until a resolution is achieved.
