On December 23, just days before Christmas, an Air India pilot faced detainment at Vancouver International Airport in Canada, raising alarms around his capacity to operate the aircraft owing to the odor of alcohol. The pilot was meant to command a Delhi-bound flight, but this incident resulted in a postponement of its departure.
Reports indicate that a duty-free store employee noticed the pilot either consuming alcohol or exuding a strong scent of it while purchasing items. This prompted the staff member to notify Canadian airport authorities, who swiftly intervened.
After being subjected to a breathalyzer test, which he did not pass, the pilot was taken into custody for further examination by local authorities. Due to this unforeseen occurrence, Air India replaced the pilot with another crew member, leading to delays for the Delhi flight.
Air India released a statement confirming, “Flight AI186 traveling from Vancouver to Delhi experienced unexpected delays on December 23 after one of the cockpit crew was removed before takeoff due to concerns about his fitness for duty. The crew member is currently under investigation, and an alternate pilot was assigned to operate the flight, contributing to the delay.”
The airline expressed its apologies for the disruption caused to passengers and assured cooperation with local authorities during the inquiry. “The pilot has been relieved of flying duties during the investigation. Air India enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding any breaches of rules and regulations. Should any violations be confirmed, the consequences will align with our disciplinary practices. Passenger safety is paramount at Air India at all times,” the statement further mentioned.
In connection with this situation, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to another member of Air India's cockpit crew for flying multiple routes between Delhi and Tokyo despite awareness of significant compliance issues. The aviation authority has requested an explanation from the pilots within two weeks.
These events have sparked worries about compliance and safety measures within the airline sector. Both regulatory bodies and airline companies are stressing the importance of adhering closely to safety protocols to safeguard passengers and preserve operational integrity.
