AIIMS Surgeon Cautions Against Excessive Winter Tea and Coffee Consumption for Joint Health

Post by : Saif Nasser

During the winter months, many people indulge in hot beverages like tea and coffee for warmth and relaxation. However, Dr. Dushyant Chouhan, an orthopaedic surgeon at AIIMS Raipur, cautions that overconsumption can adversely affect joint health. In a recent update dated November 17, he noted that excessive intake of these hot drinks can lead to dehydration, impacting the health of bones and joints.

According to Dr. Chouhan, the knee contains a vital layer of cartilage that requires adequate moisture for optimal function. Insufficient hydration can cause this cartilage to dry, resulting in bones grinding against each other, which leads to stiffness and discomfort. He observed that during colder months, individuals tend to drink more tea and coffee to keep warm while neglecting their water intake. The feeling of reduced thirst in cold weather can significantly contribute to unnoticed dehydration, exacerbating joint pain.

He emphasized that enjoying tea or coffee isn't detrimental as long as it's complemented with adequate water consumption. Maintaining proper hydration throughout the day, even in winter, is essential for ensuring healthy, well-lubricated joints. Many people overlook the connection between their beverages and joint health, yet simple habits like staying hydrated can yield significant benefits.

Dr. Chouhan expressed gratitude for the positive feedback he received regarding his advisory post, which has prompted many to share the message further. He hopes to raise awareness about the necessity of hydration during the winter months to better care for joint health.

In summary, while tea and coffee are enjoyed comforts during the colder season, excessive consumption without adequate water can lead to joint health issues. Regular water intake, coupled with a balanced diet and physical activity, can enhance joint health and maintain overall well-being throughout winter.
