In India, the tendency to self-prescribe antibiotics is alarmingly prevalent. Many individuals resort to antibiotics for fevers, coughs, or minor infections, believing they offer a quick solution. However, healthcare professionals are sounding the alarm about the dangers associated with this habit. Dr. Parwez Alam, a seasoned urologist at AIIMS Raipur, with over 15 years of experience, has issued a timely warning.
According to Dr. Alam, a popular antibiotic poses significant risks if not used judiciously. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Black Box Warning for this medication, marking it with the utmost caution. This warning signifies the potential for severe side effects, necessitating meticulous care in its administration.
Dr. Alam elaborated on the antibiotic’s potential to damage tendons, the robust structures connecting muscles to bones. Damage to these tendons can result in acute pain, weakness, and even permanent mobility issues. Furthermore, some patients have developed uncontrolled diabetes as a consequence of this medication, complicating blood sugar management.
In addition to tendon issues, the antibiotic may induce nerve complications, leading to symptoms like numbness, tingling, or burning in the extremities. Such nerve damage can interfere with daily activities and may not always heal effectively.
Worse, this antibiotic continues to be widely available and prescribed, with many purchasing it without a doctor’s guidance, mistakenly believing it to be harmless. Dr. Alam urges caution, particularly advising parents against administering this drug to children or adolescents due to its potential impact on their developing bodies.
Healthcare professionals globally are increasingly concerned that antibiotic overuse can strengthen bacteria, making treatments for even ordinary infections challenging in the future.
Dr. Alam's recommendations are straightforward:
Avoid taking antibiotics unless prescribed by a healthcare provider.
Do not pressure doctors into prescribing antibiotics if they deem them unnecessary.
Finish the complete course of antibiotics only when prescribed.
Refrain from self-medication.
This advisory is crucial for all. While medications can be lifesaving, their misuse can lead to dire consequences. Practicing caution today can safeguard your health for tomorrow.
