Doctors Caution Against Self-Prescribing Vitamin B12 Supplements

Post by : Saif Nasser

Today, the popularity of vitamin supplements is soaring. Many individuals quickly adopt trends from social media, opting for pills without assessing their necessity. Vitamin B12 frequently tops the list. If someone experiences numbness or tingling, they often attribute it to a deficiency in B12. However, medical professionals assert that this isn't always the case, and self-prescribing can pose risks.

Dr. Rahul Chawla, an esteemed neurologist trained at AIIMS and a consultant at IBS Hospital in New Delhi, recently raised awareness on this topic. In a video, he elucidated that sensations like numbness and tingling can stem from various causes, not solely from low vitamin B12 levels. Therefore, undergoing the appropriate tests prior to starting any supplements is crucial.

He cautions that self-diagnosis can be detrimental, as the actual issue might be entirely unrelated. Conditions such as nerve disorders, spinal issues, or elevated blood sugar levels can manifest similar sensations. If an individual chooses to self-medicate with supplements without understanding the real cause, the underlying condition may remain untreated.

Dr. Chawla further described the indicators of a legitimate B12 deficiency. Symptoms like fatigue, pale skin, weakness, dizziness, and numbness in extremities can arise from insufficient B12. In some cases, cognitive issues or emotional fluctuations may occur. In severe instances, difficulties in walking can also present. However, he emphasizes that these symptoms necessitate confirmation through a blood test before taking any actions.

Though vitamin B12 is vital for nerve health, it’s not universally required. Excessive intake without need can mask other health concerns, potentially delaying essential treatments. This is why consulting with a medical professional is paramount.

Dr. Chawla's message is abundantly clear: avoid diagnosing your health based on online symptoms. Resist the temptation to mimic others' choices. Supplements should not be initiated without proper medical guidance. A straightforward blood test can provide the accuracy needed to avoid serious health complications in the future.

In an environment where instant solutions and popular health trends proliferate, Dr. Chawla’s counsel is a vital reminder. Health choices should be grounded in verified information, not fleeting trends. Always seek a doctor's advice before embarking on any supplement regimen, particularly for symptoms like numbness and tingling, which can have myriad causes.
