Many rush through their mornings, often unaware of how their routines can disrupt stomach health and overall well-being. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a prominent gastroenterologist from AIIMS with 25 years of experience, sheds light on several daily habits that can quietly harm digestion. In a recent social media post, he highlighted seven prevalent morning practices that could inadvertently upset gut health.
According to Dr. Sethi, mornings should set a positive tone for a healthy day. However, hasty behaviors, skipping meals, or making poor food choices can throw off digestive balance, elevate acid levels, and slow digestion.
Among the critical mistakes, he identifies is the common habit of skipping breakfast. After a night of fasting, the stomach is empty, and not eating breakfast can lead to acid buildup and sluggish digestive functions. He suggests starting the day with protein and fiber-rich options like eggs with spinach, oats sprinkled with nuts, or yogurt mixed with berries—foods that stabilize blood sugar, support digestion, and nourish beneficial gut bacteria.
Another detrimental practice is consuming black coffee immediately upon waking. Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can spike acid and cortisol levels, irritating the stomach lining. Dr. Sethi recommends drinking water first and opting for a small snack prior to coffee consumption, which helps mitigate caffeine's effects and maintain steady energy levels.
Additionally, many start their day with sugary cereals or pastries. While they may taste good, these options can cause rapid blood sugar fluctuations, leading to hunger pangs, bloating, and digestive issues. Choosing whole, fiber-rich foods is a much better approach.
He further notes that rushing in the morning can contribute to poor digestion. When people are hurried, they may chew less, skip hydration, or eat under stress, which confuses the digestive process and can result in discomfort throughout the day.
Another oversight he points out is failing to properly hydrate. During the night, the body's water supply dwindles, and starting the day without sufficient hydration may cause constipation and hinder digestion. Dr. Sethi advocates for a glass of water in the morning to jumpstart the gut's functions.
Heavy or greasy foods are also a mistake for breakfast, as these can challenge the stomach's ability to digest efficiently. Lighter, well-balanced meals are far easier on the digestive system, helping to maintain energy levels.
Lastly, he advises that not engaging in any form of movement can adversely affect digestion. Gentle stretches or short walks in the morning can enhance gut function and alleviate bloating.
Dr. Sethi’s overarching message is clear: by making slight adjustments to morning behaviors, individuals can significantly enhance their digestive health. Consuming water, eating a nutritious breakfast, steering clear of coffee on an empty stomach, and taking time to breathe can all contribute to a calmer, healthier stomach. He encourages everyone to adopt mindful choices to ensure their gut functions optimally throughout the day.
