Medical Expert Advises Against Cotton Bud Usage in Ear Care

Post by : Saif Nasser

Despite the common practice of using cotton buds for ear cleaning, medical professionals are cautioning against it. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist with training from AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, emphasizes the dangers of inserting cotton buds into the ear. His advisory was featured in a recent message, outlining the risks associated with this habit.

Dr. Sethi explains that ears possess a natural self-cleaning ability, eliminating the need for cotton buds or other implements to manage earwax. While earwax may appear unappealing, it plays a crucial protective role against dust, dirt, and infection. It gradually migrates outward, but using cotton buds tends to push it further inside, potentially leading to blockages, discomfort, and infections.

Additionally, improper use of cotton buds can result in physical damage to the ear. Scratching the ear canal can lead to painful complications, and in severe instances, it can affect the eardrum, resulting in symptoms such as tinnitus, acute pain, or diminished hearing ability. Dr. Sethi cautions that the brief ease provided by cleaning the ear with cotton buds is not worth the potential long-term consequences.

Referencing a study from 2017, the doctor noted that over 70% of ear-related injuries recorded in emergency departments were linked to the use of cotton buds. This highlights a widespread misconception that these products are safe for ear care.

Dr. Sethi strongly urges people to cease the use of cotton buds for ear cleaning. Instead, if excessive wax is a concern, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable for safe removal using appropriate methods. He pointed out that the warning on cotton bud packaging, stating “Do not insert into the ear canal,” often goes unheeded.

Understanding this message is vital for all individuals. Maintaining ear hygiene doesn’t necessitate cotton buds or special cleaning solutions; the ear is designed to self-manage its cleanliness. It's much safer to rely on the body’s innate mechanisms rather than risk injuries that could lead to long-lasting auditory issues.
