A significant milestone unfolds for Afghanistan’s women cricketers as the Afghanistan Refugee Team readies to embark on a tour to England next month. This tour signifies their remarkable return to international cricket after being compelled to leave their homeland when the Taliban reasserted control and suppressed women’s involvement in sports.
The roster features numerous former athletes who had been contracted with the Afghanistan Cricket Board prior to the disruption of women's cricket activities under Taliban governance. Many of these talented women resettled in various nations, including Australia, where they pursued domestic cricket, despite the absence of international play.
The England and Wales Cricket Board revealed that the tour will kick off on June 22, encompassing a series of Twenty20 matches, training sessions, and special engagements during the Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s on July 5. Officials highlighted this tour as a crucial step towards fostering inclusion, equality, and advancing women’s involvement in cricket on a global scale.
The revival of these athletes in organized competition is being propelled by “It’s Game On,” an initiative co-founded by ex-Australian cricketer Mel Jones. This organization has played a key role in re-establishing connections between displaced Afghan athletes and their sport after enduring prolonged periods of doubt and isolation.
Reflecting on the tour, Mel Jones commended the strength and spirit demonstrated by the Afghan players. She emphasized that even after enduring hardships of losing homes and careers, the athletes remained steadfast in their dedication to cricket, persistently seeking acknowledgment within the global sports community.
The situation has reignited international dialogue surrounding the International Cricket Council's role in bolstering women's cricket in Afghanistan. ICC regulations mandate that full member nations offer support to both male and female cricket teams. Numerous advocates and former athletes have consistently called for enhanced measures and formal acknowledgment for the refugee team.
Officials from the England and Wales Cricket Board have reiterated that cricket stands for inclusion, equality, and opportunity. They regard the forthcoming tour not just as a sporting venture but also as a poignant emblem of hope and resilience for female athletes who are tirelessly advocating for their right to participate in sports.
