Adani Group Unveils Plan for Huge Battery Storage Facility in Gujarat

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Adani Group is set to develop what will be India’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Khavda, Gujarat. This project, which is one of the most significant single-location installations globally, is expected to be completed by March 2026.

This venture is pivotal for India’s renewable energy landscape, integrating advanced technology with extensive energy storage to improve grid reliability. The project will incorporate over 700 lithium-ion battery containers, delivering a power capacity of 1,126 MW and an energy storage capability of 3,530 MWh, sufficient to supply full power for about three hours.

Equipped with intelligent energy management systems, the facility will optimize electricity consumption by reallocating energy during peak demand and lowering carbon emissions. Once finalized, the Khavda installation will stand out as the largest combined renewable energy and storage hub in the world, ensuring a steady supply of renewable energy and enhancing grid stability.

The Adani Group has further plans to scale its storage capacity by adding an impressive 15 GWh by March 2027, with a long-term target of reaching 50 GWh in five years. This strategy demonstrates a commitment to fostering a modern, sustainable energy infrastructure that aligns with India’s net-zero ambitions.

As battery energy storage gains traction globally, especially alongside the rise of solar and wind energy, India is set to achieve approximately 800 MW in total BESS capacity this year. This highlights the urgent need for accelerated developments to meet the country’s clean energy objectives, including a target of 500 GW by 2030.

Through this visionary project, Adani Group reinforces its leadership in India’s energy transition, merging innovation, sustainability, and large-scale operations to address future energy requirements.
