On Friday morning, Bangladesh experienced a significant earthquake that triggered widespread fear, destruction, and loss of life across multiple districts. The quake, recorded at a magnitude of 5.5, hit at 10:38 am near Narsingdi, located roughly 33 km from the capital, Dhaka.
The abrupt tremor instigated panic, particularly as many individuals were at home enjoying their day off. In various parts of Dhaka, there was a mass exodus from buildings, with onlookers visibly distressed and comforting one another.
Officials have confirmed that at least nine lives were lost and over 300 individuals suffered injuries as a direct consequence of the earthquake. Several victims with serious injuries were transported to hospitals in Dhaka.
A total of 14 buildings sustained damage across various districts. The collapse of masonry from an eight-storey structure in Dhaka led to injuries among people nearby.
Additionally, a fire erupted at a power station shortly after the quake, but emergency responders managed to contain it swiftly.
Witnesses recounted disturbing scenes. One reported seeing debris fall on individuals waiting to purchase meat, while another described a tragic incident where a child sustained a fatal injury from falling rubble.
Interim leader of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, expressed deep condolences for the casualties and injuries. He has directed all government departments to evaluate damages and extend immediate assistance.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department indicated that the shaking persisted for roughly 26 seconds, providing enough time for individuals to escape outside as buildings swayed.
Yunus, who assumed leadership post-last year's mass uprising, assured that all necessary actions were being taken. National elections are slated for February 2026.
The shockwaves from the earthquake also reached the Indian city of Kolkata, situated over 325 km from the epicenter. Residents there evacuated homes and workplaces, though no significant damage was reported.
Efforts are underway to thoroughly assess the full extent of the damage in Bangladesh, with emergency teams actively monitoring the situation.
