6.3-Magnitude Quake Strikes East Nusa Tenggara; No Tsunami Risk

Post by : Raina Nasser

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale rattled Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province in the early hours of Monday, officials said, with no immediate reports of damage or fatalities. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the event at 00:04 a.m. Jakarta time, placing the epicentre about 82 km northwest of North Central Timor Regency at a depth of 75 km.

The tremor was perceptible to residents across parts of the region, but authorities indicated there is no tsunami potential following the quake. Gasper Losa Manisa, head of the East Nusa Tenggara Disaster Management Agency, said locals felt the shaking but there was no panic; to date emergency services have not received reports of injuries or structural damage as teams continue monitoring the situation.

BMKG supplied the epicentre coordinates as 9.06 degrees south latitude and 123.97 degrees east longitude. Seismologists cautioned that aftershocks remain possible, though there is no evidence suggesting an imminent larger event linked to this tremor.

Disaster response units have been placed on alert to inspect buildings and locate any delayed signs of harm that might emerge after the initial event. The incident underscores Indonesia's persistent seismic risk given its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of frequent tectonic activity.

Officials urged residents to remain calm, keep emergency kits accessible and follow guidance from local authorities. The 6.3-magnitude quake highlights the ongoing need for readiness and robust early-warning systems in quake-prone areas.
