An offshore earthquake registering 6.2 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Sulawesi on Wednesday, November 5. Indonesia’s geophysical agency confirmed the tremor and said it did not prompt a tsunami warning.
This event follows another strong tremor earlier in the week: a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in the Banda Sea near the Maluku Islands, reported at an estimated depth of about 137 kilometres. Officials said neither of the recent quakes produced a tsunami risk.
Indonesia lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where multiple tectonic plates converge and generate frequent seismic and volcanic activity. That geologic setting makes the nation one of the world’s most earthquake-prone areas.
With more than 270 million residents across thousands of islands, Indonesia has endured several deadly seismic disasters in recent decades. A 6.2-magnitude quake in Sulawesi in January 2021 killed over 100 people and displaced many; a 7.5-magnitude quake followed by a tsunami devastated Palu in 2018, causing more than 2,200 fatalities. The 2004 Aceh earthquake and consequent tsunami — magnitude 9.1 — resulted in roughly 170,000 deaths within Indonesia.
While Wednesday’s tremor did not produce widespread destruction, it highlights the continuing seismic risk. Authorities are tracking aftershocks and advising residents to stay alert and follow official safety guidance in the coming days.
