Prachi Mandholia, a renowned nutritionist based in Mumbai with over 16 years of expertise, recently unveiled five essential superfoods designed to enhance health during the winter months. While the season offers cozy clothing and delightful seasonal dishes, it also brings along common ailments such as colds and fatigue. According to Mandholia, selecting the right foods available in our kitchens is crucial to maintaining good health.
Winter may seem inviting, yet many individuals face health challenges due to the colder temperatures weakening their bodies. To combat this, incorporating local and seasonal ingredients is vital. Mandholia emphasized that these five superfoods can elevate immunity, boost energy levels, aid digestion, and improve skin appearance.
Mustard greens, locally known as sarson, play a key role in strengthening the body from within and are commonly featured in winter meals, providing vital nutrients that enhance immune function. Another winter staple is bajra, a nourishing grain used in rotis, which helps maintain warmth and offers sustained energy—ideal for chilly days.
Carrots also hold importance during the winter months. Packed with vitamins that support vision and promote healthy skin, carrots are enjoyed in various forms including salads, soups, and the beloved Indian dessert gajar ka halwa, especially popular in colder climates.
Another winter superfood, sesame seeds—known as til—are excellent for digestion and provide an energy boost. They find their way into traditional foods like laddus and chikkis, contributing to warmth and overall health during the winter.
Lastly, oranges are a standout superfood on Mandholia’s list. Rich in vitamin C, these fruits combat infections, shield against colds and coughs, and contribute to a fresh complexion. Including a daily orange can significantly bolster immunity and supply essential nutrients during winter.
Mandholia advocates that winter does not need to be synonymous with illness or lethargy. By embracing these nutrient-rich foods, everyone can remain vibrant and healthy throughout the cold season. She urges incorporating mustard greens, bajra, carrots, sesame seeds, and oranges into daily diets as they are accessible, plentiful, and beneficial for families.
She also noted that our kitchens can serve as a mini-pharmacy in winter when we select the right ingredients. Seasonal foods are naturally equipped to support our bodies through varying weather, making winter foods particularly advantageous for immunity and warmth.
Through simple dietary adjustments and the inclusion of these natural superfoods, individuals can maintain health and resilience all winter long.
