5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Gansu, Leading to Mass Evacuations

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Beijing: A 5.5 magnitude earthquake rattled Tebo County, located within the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province, northwest China, this Monday, as reported by the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC).

The seismic event necessitated the evacuation of more than 20,000 individuals to safer areas. Local officials have confirmed that there have been no casualties in the impacted zones.

In light of the earthquake, public safety authorities deployed 350 police officers to aid in search and rescue operations. The Gansu provincial fire and rescue team also sent in 340 personnel, supported by 65 vehicles and seven trained search dogs, to assist in reaching those affected and offer immediate help.

While minor structural damages occurred in certain buildings, rapid response strategies effectively mitigated the risk of serious injuries. Relief teams remain throughout the region, monitoring aftershocks and providing necessary aid.

The local government has advised residents to remain alert and adhere to the safety guidelines issued by emergency services, while concurrently assessing and strengthening vulnerable structures.

This event is part of a series of seismic activities in northwest China, underscoring the critical need for preparedness and swift response in earthquake-prone areas. Authorities are actively evaluating the situation to ensure public safety in the aftermath.
