Xinjiang, China – November 6, 2025: A 4.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Xinjiang in the northwest of the country earlier today. Seismological agencies say the event originated about 220 kilometres beneath the surface, and initial assessments report no fatalities or significant structural damage.
The tremor follows a 4.9-magnitude event on October 26 that was centered at a depth of roughly 130 km. In recent months Xinjiang and other Chinese regions have recorded several moderate quakes, indicating sustained activity within this seismically active corridor.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) continues to track these events. Recent occurrences cited by officials include a 4.2-magnitude quake on September 8 at about 50 km depth and a shallow 4.1-magnitude shock on September 7 at roughly 10 km depth. Specialists warn that shallow ruptures tend to transmit stronger shaking to the surface and therefore carry higher risk.
China lies at the junction of major seismic provinces — notably the circum-Pacific and circum-Indian belts — and the interplay of the Pacific, Indian and Philippine plates has produced broad fault systems across the country. Historically, more than 800 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or above have been recorded since the early 1900s, impacting almost every province and autonomous region.
The human toll has been severe: records show that since 1900 earthquakes in China have accounted for in excess of 550,000 deaths — a substantial proportion of global earthquake fatalities. Since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, upwards of 100 destructive quakes have led to more than 270,000 fatalities and the loss of millions of dwellings.
Although the latest 4.7 event caused no reported injuries or damage, authorities and experts emphasise the ongoing need for preparedness. Continuous monitoring and disaster readiness remain critical to reducing the threat posed by future seismic events to populations and infrastructure.
