3.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Assam’s Dima Hasao District

Post by : Raina Nasser

A 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Dima Hasao region in Assam on Wednesday afternoon, according to seismic reports. The shockwave was detected at 12:40 pm IST, originating from approximately 30 kilometers underground, with its epicenter located at latitude 25.19° N and longitude 92.92° E, in a secluded hilly area.

Initial assessments from local officials indicate no fatalities or damage to structures have been reported thus far. Residents experienced tremors, but the quake’s impact has been minimal due to its slight intensity and remote origin.

Situated in India’s northeastern region, Assam is positioned near multiple seismic zones and frequently witnesses small to moderate earthquakes. Seismologists stress the importance of recognizing even minor tremors as reminders of the region's seismic vulnerability and the critical nature of preparedness.

This earthquake highlights ongoing worries regarding the resilience of infrastructure in isolated and mountainous locales, where effective early warning systems and building regulations are essential to mitigate potential risks. Local disaster management units have been instructed to stay vigilant and check for any overlooked signs of damage.

Dima Hasao residents are advised to remain alert and report any observable cracks or unusual alterations in their homes and public facilities. Additionally, a comprehensive examination by geological and seismic specialists is anticipated within the next few days.
