On Wednesday, Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza, resulting in 27 fatalities, as reported by local officials. These assaults rank among the most lethal since a ceasefire was established last month. Israel and Hamas have both charged one another with breaching the tenuous truce.
Gaza’s civil defense agency confirmed that 14 deaths occurred in Gaza City and 13 in Khan Yunis. Two local hospitals verified these figures. Israel stated that the airstrikes were aimed at Hamas following militant fire at Israeli troop locations in the southern region, labelling this as a ceasefire breach. Hamas refuted the claim, branding the strikes a “perilous escalation” that jeopardizes the ceasefire.
The bombings triggered widespread panic among civilians. Ahraf Abu Sultan, 50, lamented returning home in Gaza City only to face renewed onslaughts after a year-long displacement. “We barely managed to fix one room in our bombarded house to feel settled, and now death and destruction urge us to flee again. There’s no respite for us,” he expressed. Another local, Nivine Ahmed, recounted the chaos: “We heard blasts and witnessed plumes of smoke. People ran as ambulances transported the deceased away.”
The ceasefire, which has largely held since October 10, forms part of a US-brokered agreement that also facilitated the return of the last 48 hostages. While several living captives have been reunited with their families, three deceased hostages’ bodies remain in Gaza. The second phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace proposition—encompassing the disarmament of Hamas, formation of a transitional authority, and deployment of an international stabilisation force—remains unimplemented. The UN Security Council has recently backed Trump’s initiative, yet Hamas has criticized it for not adequately addressing Palestinian political or humanitarian needs.
This surge in violence arises two years post-Hamas’s assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, which claimed 1,221 lives. Israel's retaliatory measures have led to at least 69,513 casualties within Gaza.
Additionally, Israeli forces targeted Hezbollah weapon storage sites in southern Lebanon. The IDF claimed that Hezbollah, supported by Iran, was attempting to restore its military capacity. These actions proceeded despite an existing ceasefire in Lebanon, introduced last November. They followed a lethal incident the previous day in a Palestinian refugee camp, resulting in 13 deaths, marking the deadliest violence in Lebanon since the truce began.
On the same day, key Israeli leaders visited troops stationed near the Syrian border. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed their presence as “crucial for Israel’s safety,” drawing condemnation from Damascus, which described the visit as a “grave infringement of Syrian sovereignty.”
These recent incidents illuminate the escalating tensions within the region and the fragility of ceasefires. As military operations persist, it is civilians in Gaza and Lebanon who continue to endure the consequences, while long-term peace initiatives remain in limbo.
