On Monday morning, a 2.8 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors began at around 8:44 am, with the epicenter located in North Delhi at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers.
The NCS provided an update: "Earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred on 19/01/2026 at 08:44:16 IST, latitude 28.86 N, longitude 77.06 E, depth 5 km, location North Delhi."
This event is part of Delhi's normal seismic activity, as the city is in Zone IV, categorized as one of the most seismically active areas in India. Notably, no earthquakes exceeding magnitude 5 have been recorded in the city over the past ten years.
Earlier this month, on January 13, Uttarakhand's Bageshwar district experienced a mild earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale near Kapkot town, about 30 kilometers from the city center. The tremor occurred at 7:25 am, prompting residents to evacuate their homes, but thankfully, there were no fatalities or major damage.
The Delhi-NCR region has experienced several quakes in recent years, including a 4.1-magnitude event in Haryana in 2022. While these earthquakes have been shallow, they have resulted in minimal damage.
Residents are encouraged to stay calm yet vigilant, maintaining readiness due to the area's seismic risks. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation to safeguard public safety.
