International Probe Nets 18 in €300M Online Card-Fraud Network

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

A coordinated international investigation has disrupted a large-scale online fraud and money-laundering network. German authorities report 18 suspects were taken into custody after synchronized operations across ten countries, with actions spanning Germany, Italy, the United States and Singapore.

Prosecutors say the scheme, active from 2016 through 2021, involved the illicit collection of payment-card details from more than 4.3 million individuals in 193 nations. The perpetrators allegedly used that stolen data to build counterfeit subscription websites — posing as streaming, dating and entertainment services — and charged victims for bogus recurring services, generating illicit proceeds estimated in excess of €300 million (about S$450 million).

Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office stated the group compromised four major German payment service providers to circulate and conceal the criminal proceeds. Authorities declined to name the companies but said the suspects masked unlawful transfers to resemble legitimate consumer transactions.

Late on November 4, law enforcement executed simultaneous searches across multiple jurisdictions — Germany, Luxembourg, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, Cyprus, Italy, Singapore and the United States — in what officials described as one of the widest-reaching cross-border operations targeting digital payment fraud in recent years.

Officials called the sweep a major advance against transnational cyber-fraud networks and indicated inquiries remain active, with additional arrests and asset seizures expected as investigations continue.
