Zootopia 2 Sets New Box Office Records in China and Globally

Post by : Mina Rahman

Zootopia 2 has emerged as a monumental success around the globe, with a significant portion of its earnings during the Wednesday-to-Sunday period deriving from China. The animated sequel generated a staggering $272 million in China, breaking the record held by the original film since 2016, and establishing itself as the highest-grossing Hollywood animated feature in the country.

In the North American market, the film brought in $156 million, claiming the top position at the domestic box office. The narrative centers on a tenacious bunny police officer paired with her astute fox companion as they unravel mysteries within a vibrant city inhabited by talking animals, delivering a blend of humor, heart, and adventure appealing to all ages.

The musical production Wicked: For Good also performed remarkably well, drawing in $92.2 million globally in its second weekend and amassing a total of $393.3 million within just 10 days.

Both films' triumphs provide a timely lift for cinemas heading into the holiday season, a peak period for box office activity. Ticket sales year-to-date in the U.S. and Canada have reached $7.8 billion, showing a modest increase from last year, though still trailing behind pre-pandemic figures.

Industry experts express optimism that the recent successes, along with upcoming marketing efforts and trailers, will maintain robust attendance levels throughout the remainder of the year, anticipating the release of the next Avatar film.
