Zohran Mamdani to Reside in Gracie Mansion as New York's Mayor

New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed his move to Gracie Mansion, the iconic Manhattan residence that has been home to most city mayors since World War II. This decision puts an end to the speculation surrounding whether he would vacate his rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria, Queens, a significant point during his campaign.

“This choice prioritizes my family's security and my commitment to advancing the affordability agenda that New Yorkers voted for,” stated Mamdani.

His Astoria residence, set in a dynamic neighborhood known for its rich immigrant communities and diverse dining options, has been his home base for many years. “To Astoria: thank you for showcasing the best of NYC,” he remarked. “Though I may no longer reside in Astoria, the spirit of Astoria will forever be a part of me and my endeavors.”

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani emphasized the connection between his own housing situation and his policy on rent freezes. Critics like former Governor Andrew Cuomo raised questions about why Mamdani, from an influential family—his mother is filmmaker Mira Nair and his father Mahmood Mamdani, a professor at Columbia University—was in a rent-stabilized unit.

Not all mayors choose to inhabit Gracie Mansion. For instance, Michael Bloomberg opted to stay in his Upper East Side townhouse during his three terms, utilizing the mansion primarily for official events and overseeing its renovations.

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion is characterized by its butter-yellow siding, green shutters, and white railings, with interiors that echo its Federal-era history. The mansion boasts five bedrooms and enhanced security features for the mayor and family.

The mansion also has its share of mysterious tales. Chirlane McCray, spouse of former Mayor Bill de Blasio, recounted incidents of doors spontaneously opening and unsettling creaking sounds. The departing Mayor Eric Adams affirmed, “There are ghosts in there, man.”

Mamdani's rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria had a monthly rent of about $2,300, well below the city's average one-bedroom cost of $3,500. His relocation to Gracie Mansion marks a notable transition from a modest life in Queens to the historic and monumental responsibilities of New York's official mayoral residence.
