Istanbul has launched the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), uniting parliamentary leaders worldwide to confront significant challenges in peace, development, and governance.

The inaugural session featured diverse participants, including a prominent delegation from Qatar's Shura Council, headed by Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim.

Emphasis on Global Unity and Sustainable Growth

Attendees underscored the pressing requirement for enhanced international parliamentary collaboration to address escalating global issues. Focus was placed on ensuring international peace and fostering sustainable development for generations ahead.

Under the banner of “Nurturing hope, securing peace, and ensuring justice for future generations,” the assembly included a virtual address from António Guterres, who reiterated critical global aims like peace, social equity, and the advancement of sustainable development.

According to the IPU, the assembly convenes amid multifaceted global challenges necessitating integrated parliamentary strategies. Central discussions will revolve around international security, governance post-conflict, and the pursuit of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Qatar's Commitment to Climate Initiatives

Qatar's engagement also spanned the 5th Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, where lawmakers deliberated on the crucial need for climate-resilient urban planning.

In his address, Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi discussed the profound impact of climate change on developing nations, particularly concerning resource limitations and environmental challenges. He called for innovative urban planning adaptations.

He also reiterated Qatar’s dedication to sustainability, aligning with its National Vision 2030. This commitment includes substantial investments in sustainable infrastructure, the growth of clean energy initiatives, and improved resource management.

Furthermore, he emphasized the Shura Council's essential role in advancing these initiatives through oversight and legislative measures, highlighting the necessity for enhanced parliamentary collaboration in addressing global climate issues, especially concerning climate finance and technology transfer.
