Wicked: For Good Sets New Box Office Records with $226M Opening

Post by : Mina Rahman

The much-anticipated sequel to the acclaimed musical Wicked, titled Wicked: For Good, has surpassed initial expectations at the box office during its opening weekend. Featuring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the film was expected to earn around $145 million in North America, but it defied predictions, accumulating $150 million domestically.

This achievement sets a new benchmark for cinematic adaptations of Broadway musicals, positioning it as the third-best domestic opening for any musical, trailing only behind Disney's The Lion King (2019) and Beauty and the Beast (2017). Notably, the original Wicked amassed $111 million during its debut weekend, a milestone the sequel has significantly surpassed.

On an international scale, Wicked: For Good generated an additional $76 million, leading to a remarkable global total of $226 million within just three days. This monumental figure has already placed the film as the 18th highest-grossing movie of 2025, outpacing notable releases such as Snow White, Joker: Folie à Deux, and One Battle After Another.

Drawing from the beloved Broadway production and Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, the film continues the story inspired by The Wizard of Oz. In this sequel, Glinda and Elphaba, now portrayed as the Wicked Witch of the West, confront the sinister machinations of The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).
