Wicked: For Good Achieves Remarkable Box Office Milestone

The sequel to the film adaptation of Wicked, titled Wicked: For Good, brought back Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba alongside Ariana Grande as Glinda, achieving the third-highest domestic opening weekend ever for a musical. Only Disney's live-action The Lion King and the 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast surpassed it, as reported by Universal Pictures and Comscore.

This film rejuvenated a North American box office that had faced a nine-week drought, during which ticket sales collectively remained under $100 million.

Universal's president of domestic theatrical distribution, Jim Orr, expressed his excitement, stating, "It's incredibly satisfying to witness the immense effort invested by our filmmakers, Marc Platt and Jon Chu, along with our exceptional cast, yielding such positive results."

Film adaptations of musicals can be hit or miss. While adaptations like Dear Evan Hansen and In the Heights had lukewarm receptions, successful ventures like Mamma Mia! are rare.

Industry analyst Daniel Loria commented on the decision to split Wicked into two films, calling it a bold gamble. "Most studios would have opted for a single film," he remarked. "Extracting two blockbusters from the same intellectual property is an impressive achievement."

Experts attribute the film's triumph to the timeless appeal of the Broadway production, director Jon Chu's strategic casting, and robust marketing efforts. Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted, "It seems to resonate with younger audiences, similar to how The Sound of Music resonated with earlier generations."

While critics had mixed feedback—one suggesting that "too much of Wicked: For Good resembles Oz the World Turns"—audiences were thrilled, granting the film an A rating from CinemaScore and a 95% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sean Gamble, Cinemark's president and CEO, noted that "Wicked: For Good opened 30% larger than the first film, marking our second-largest November opening ever." Universal highlighted the film's strong performance in family-oriented regions like Salt Lake City, Utah.

On a global scale, the film gathered another $76 million across 78 countries beyond North America, accumulating an impressive total of $226 million for its opening weekend.
