A Thai-flagged cargo vessel has become the latest victim of rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, after it was struck by unidentified projectiles and later ran aground near Qeshm Island.
The ship, identified as the Mayuree Naree, was attacked earlier this month while sailing through one of the world’s most important and sensitive shipping routes. According to reports, the vessel was hit near its stern, triggering a powerful explosion that caused a fire in the engine room.
Following the attack, chaos unfolded onboard as the crew attempted to control the situation. Many were forced to abandon the ship as flames spread. Rescue operations were quickly launched, and the Omani navy managed to save 20 crew members. However, three crew members remain missing and are feared to have been trapped during the explosion.
Days after the incident, the damaged vessel drifted and eventually ran aground off the coast of Qeshm Island, an Iranian island located near the narrow entrance of the Strait of Hormuz. The full extent of the damage to the ship is still unclear, and investigations are ongoing to determine who was behind the attack.
This incident comes amid escalating tensions in the region, where multiple ships have reportedly been targeted in recent weeks. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global chokepoint, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. Any disruption in this area raises serious concerns for global trade, energy security, and maritime safety.
The attack highlights the growing risks faced by commercial shipping in conflict-affected zones. Shipping companies, governments, and international organizations are increasingly worried about the safety of crews and vessels navigating through the region. With tensions still high, the possibility of further incidents remains a major concern for the global community.
