Political Controversy Arises Over Vande Mataram Recital in Kerala

Post by : Shakul

A political storm brewed in Kerala following the complete rendition of the national song “Vande Mataram” at the inauguration of the Congress-led UDF Cabinet. This event sparked an intense debate between the Left parties and the BJP, both accusing one another of manipulating nationalism and secularism for political gain.

The CPIM condemned the full performance of the anthem, labeling it as unsuitable for a diverse and secular society. Party officials insisted that only the officially permitted opening lines of “Vande Mataram” should be recited at governmental events, according to the historical agreements of national leaders and the Constituent Assembly.

CPI’s Binoy Viswam remarked that the earlier decision to limit the national song was rooted in upholding India’s secular principles. He pointed out that certain segments of the song possess religious meanings that may not reflect the inclusive vision advocated by Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

The situation escalated with the BJP accusing Left parties of belittling the national song to appease extremist groups. BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized the communists, claiming that Marxist ideology is out of touch with Indian culture and customs. He suggested that the Left's stance on “Vande Mataram” is a form of appeasement politics.

Insiders from the newly established Kerala government reportedly distanced themselves from the issue, stating that event organization was managed by Lok Bhavan authorities. They emphasized that there was no political intention behind the full version being recited during the oath-taking.

Moreover, the CPIM highlighted that even in various BJP-led states, the complete version of “Vande Mataram” is not performed during official functions. The party cautioned that such actions could undermine the nation’s secular fabric and foster unwarranted divisions in society.

This dispute has generated broader political discussions throughout Kerala, with social media users and political figures examining themes of nationalism, constitutional norms, and the intersection of religion and public ceremonies. The controversy is anticipated to remain a prominent political topic in the upcoming days.
