In a significant meeting, senior representatives from Taiwan and the United States convened to fortify their alliance in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), cutting-edge technology, drone advancement, and economic security. This collaboration, which has deepened since the Trump era, showcases the evolving strategic relationship between the two nations, despite their lack of formal diplomatic ties.
The discussions, spearheaded by Jacob Helberg, U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, alongside Taiwan’s Economy Minister, Kung Ming-hsin, revolved around important initiatives, including the Pax Silica Declaration — a U.S.-led effort aimed at securing AI and semiconductor supply chains — as well as a treaty aimed at enhancing economic security partnerships.
Recognized as a crucial supporter of the AI movement, Taiwan, a key player in semiconductor manufacturing, was highlighted during the talks. Areas of focus also included safeguarding supply chains, certifying drone components, and collaborating on critical mineral supply vital for technology manufacturing.
Officials addressed strategies to combat economic coercion, enhance cooperation in third-party nations, and eliminate tax-related obstacles to encourage investment flows between the U.S. and Taiwan. Taiwan has long sought a bilateral agreement to prevent double taxation, a critical factor for stimulating cross-border investments.
In addition to economic and technological alignment, both nations conveyed that maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is pivotal for worldwide economic security and prosperity. Other topics of discussion included securing undersea communication networks, advancing low-Earth orbit satellite collaboration, and expanding training initiatives to cultivate high-tech talent.
Taiwan recently reported Chinese interference with undersea telecom and internet cables, claims that Beijing refutes. In response, Taiwan is amplifying its reliance on low-Earth orbit satellites to ensure backup communications in case of undersea cable disruptions.
This elevated partnership between the U.S. and Taiwan signifies a strategic effort to bolster cooperation in critical technology sectors and enhance infrastructure security amid escalating global geopolitical tensions.
