US Greenlights Support Services for India’s Apache Helicopters and M777A2 Howitzers

Post by : Shweta

The United States has sanctioned potential sales of support services and associated defence equipment aimed at India's Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers, marking a significant enhancement in military collaboration between Washington and New Delhi. The U.S. Department of State announced this approval under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme, signifying a pivotal development in the strategic partnership between the two nations.

As per U.S. government statements, the proposed support package for Apache helicopters is valued at approximately 198.2 million U.S. dollars. This package primarily encompasses maintenance and sustainment support for India's AH-64E Apache helicopters, providing engineering services, technical assistance, logistics support, training support, and related programme aid. Boeing and Lockheed Martin are anticipated to be the primary contractors involved.

Simultaneously, the U.S. State Department has also sanctioned a possible support package worth around 230 million U.S. dollars for India's M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. This package is designed to offer long-term sustainment support, spare parts, repair services, technical aid, training, field service support, and other logistics-related services. BAE Systems, a British defence firm, is expected to lead the contracting for M777 support.

The M777A2 howitzers form a crucial component of India's artillery modernization strategy, particularly in mountainous regions where lighter artillery units are more easily transported and deployed. Currently, India operates around 145 M777 howitzers, many of which were assembled locally through collaboration between BAE Systems and Mahindra Defence Systems under the "Make in India" initiative.

The AH-64E Apache helicopters represent some of the most sophisticated attack helicopters in service within the Indian military, built for precision strikes, battlefield reconnaissance, anti-armour missions, and combat support operations. These helicopters have significantly bolstered India's air combat capabilities, especially in sensitive border zones and contemporary warfare scenarios.

According to the U.S. Department of State, these proposed sales aim to enhance American foreign policy and national security aims by fostering ties with India, which Washington identifies as a vital defence ally in the Indo-Pacific region. The statement also recognized India’s important role in promoting regional stability, peace, and economic growth across South Asia and the Indo-Pacific.

Officials assert that the proposed support packages are intended to assist India in addressing both current and prospective security challenges. The U.S. government highlighted that India would find it simple to integrate these support systems and services into its military, given its existing operational familiarity with both the Apache helicopters and M777 howitzers.

This approval arrives amid a surge in defence collaboration between India and the United States. In recent years, the two nations have entered into multiple significant defence agreements covering helicopters, drones, surveillance technologies, fighter aircraft systems, and joint military training exercises. Defence cooperation has emerged as one of the foundational pillars of the India-U.S. relationship.

Strategic analysts believe that these recent support deals illustrate increasing American efforts to solidify military partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region against a backdrop of escalating geopolitical rivalry and security apprehensions. India continues to modernize its armed forces, concurrently enhancing its cooperation with Western defence allies in areas such as logistics, intelligence sharing, and advanced weaponry.

Before they can proceed officially, the proposed deals must receive final approval from the U.S. Congress. However, such approvals are typically viewed as procedural following clearance from the State Department and the Defence Security Cooperation Agency.
