Turkmenistan has taken a significant stride in enhancing digital research and innovation with the inauguration of the UNESCO Chair in Digital Science at the International Science and Technology Park. This program signifies the nation's dedication to modernizing its scientific and educational frameworks through global partnerships.

The launch event, which took place on April 15, gathered a diverse group of prominent scientists, educators, policymakers, and youthful researchers. Attendees enjoyed an exhibition featuring groundbreaking projects, digital transformation efforts across various sectors, and noteworthy scientific accomplishments of emerging talents—emphasizing the country's ambition to foster innovation.

Chynar Rustemova, the Executive Secretary of Turkmenistan's National Commission for UNESCO, stressed the critical role of international collaboration in pushing forward digital technologies. She affirmed that enhancing relations with UNESCO remains a strategic focus, especially relating to artificial intelligence, data science, and open knowledge systems.

Allaberdi Ashirov, the President of the Academy of Sciences, shared insights on the historical relevance of the new chair, viewing it as an embodiment of the nation’s long-term goal to weave innovation into its development strategies. He remarked that this initiative will help connect scientific research to practical uses across various domains.

Durdymyrat Gadamov, Director of the International Science and Technology Park, detailed the focus areas for the new department, highlighting advances in artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and geospatial technologies. These advancements are projected to significantly enhance resource management, boost agricultural productivity, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

Nikolai Nikolayev, a seasoned expert in geoinformation systems and land management automation, will lead this department. His leadership is anticipated to enhance research capabilities and facilitate broader international partnerships, particularly through networks of global entities.

Part of the UNESCO UNITWIN program, connecting over 1,100 educational institutions worldwide, the newly established chair will furnish young scientists with ample opportunities. It will allow them to engage in international research, tap into advanced knowledge, and partake in global discussions about artificial intelligence ethics and open science principles.

This initiative is set to elevate Turkmenistan's position in the global academic and scientific community while empowering a new cohort of researchers. By merging technological progress with international collaboration, the UNESCO Digital Science Chair is poised to become a significant catalyst for advancing scientific innovation in the country.
