Ukraine Inflicts Heavy Losses on Russian Troops in Donetsk

Post by : Monika

On October 8, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported that Ukrainian forces have been inflicting significant losses on Russian troops in the eastern Donetsk region.

This development comes amid Ukraine's ongoing counteroffensive operations aimed at reclaiming occupied territories. Zelenskiy's statements contrast with claims made by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who asserts that Russian forces maintain the strategic initiative across all fronts.

Ukrainian Counteroffensive in Donetsk

President Zelenskiy highlighted the intensity of the fighting in the Donetsk region, particularly focusing on the area around Dobropillia, located just north of the strategic logistics hub of Pokrovsk.

In a detailed briefing with Ukraine's top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Zelenskiy was informed of the heavy casualties inflicted on Russian forces during these operations. The Ukrainian military has been actively engaged in counteroffensive actions to reclaim territories occupied by Russian troops.

Zelenskiy emphasized that Ukrainian forces are defending themselves across all directions, including areas such as Kupiansk, which has been under heavy Russian assaults for several months. Despite the challenging conditions, Ukrainian forces continue to hold their positions and inflict losses on the advancing Russian troops.

Russian Claims and Strategic Assertions

In contrast to Zelenskiy's account, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a statement made on October 7, 2025, claimed that Russian forces had captured nearly 5,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in 2025.

Putin asserted that Moscow retains full strategic initiative across all fronts and that Ukrainian forces are consistently retreating. He also criticized Ukraine's attempts to target deep inside Russian territory as ineffective.

General Valery Gerasimov, Russia's top military commander, echoed Putin's claims, stating that Russian troops are advancing across multiple fronts, including Pokrovsk, Siversk, Kostyantynivka, and Kupiansk. However, Ukrainian officials contest these assertions, stating that Russian offensives have failed to capture any major cities this year. Ukrainian forces report gains near Dobropillia and in the Sumy region, highlighting ongoing contention and local counteroffensives amid the broader conflict.

Civilian Impact and Casualties

The ongoing conflict has resulted in civilian casualties. Russian attacks have led to the deaths of civilians in various regions. In Kherson, three civilians were reported killed, and another three died in Sumy due to drone strikes. These incidents underscore the human cost of the conflict and the challenges faced by non-combatants in the affected areas.

Reuters has been unable to independently verify these battlefield accounts from either side, highlighting the complexities and challenges in obtaining accurate information from conflict zones.

The situation in the Donetsk region remains fluid, with both Ukrainian and Russian forces engaged in intense combat. While Ukrainian President Zelenskiy reports significant losses inflicted on Russian troops, Russian President Putin asserts that Moscow maintains the strategic initiative. The contrasting narratives reflect the ongoing complexities of the conflict and the challenges in obtaining accurate information from the frontlines.

As the conflict continues, the international community remains concerned about the humanitarian impact and the prospects for a peaceful resolution. Efforts to de-escalate tensions and engage in diplomatic dialogue are ongoing, but the path to peace remains uncertain.
