British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Saturday that the United Kingdom is moving its military forces, including fighter jets, to the Middle East. This move is meant to offer backup support in case the situation in the region worsens.
The UK already has some jets stationed in the Middle East as part of an ongoing mission to protect against threats in Iraq and Syria. The new move is being taken as a safety step, especially after recent violent exchanges between Iran and Israel.
Iran and Israel Trade Attacks
The decision came after Israel launched airstrikes on Iran. These strikes targeted top Iranian commanders, scientists, and nuclear sites. Israel said it was acting to stop Iran from building a nuclear weapon.
In response, Iran fired drones and missiles at Israel during the night from Friday to Saturday, leading to fears of a bigger war in the region.
UK Urges Peace, but Doesn’t Rule Out Defending Israel
When asked whether the UK would defend Israel if Iran attacks again, Starmer did not give a clear answer. Instead, he said, “I will always make the right decisions for the UK.” He added that the UK is only moving military assets to the Middle East to be ready for any emergencies.
Even though Iran warned that any Western country helping Israel could face attacks on its bases in the region, the UK has not changed its stance.
Talks with World Leaders for Peace
Before leaving London, Prime Minister Starmer spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Both leaders agreed that the situation in the Middle East is serious and must not get worse. They said it is important to calm things down and avoid more fighting.
Starmer also talked to US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Israel’s recent attacks on Iran. UK Foreign Minister David Lammy also held talks with Iranian officials.
UK Focused on Avoiding War
Starmer called the situation “fast-moving” and “intense.” He said the UK is having regular talks with its allies to try to reduce the conflict. “Our message is simple—de-escalate,” he said. “We want peace, and everything we’re doing is aimed at avoiding more violence.”
