The United Kingdom has entered into a significant trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), projecting an increase in trade of approximately $5 billion each year over the long term.
The GCC comprises six Gulf nations—Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer remarked that this agreement is set to bolster economic relationships between the UK and the Gulf region, while opening new avenues for trade and investment.
According to the UK government, this deal is forecasted to yield around £3.7 billion (AED 18.21 billion) annually in the long run, significantly surpassing the previous estimate of £1.6 billion. The final agreement features broader trade liberalization and reinforced commitments in the services domain.
The agreement stipulates the removal of 93 percent of GCC tariffs impacting British goods. It is anticipated that the deal will abolish roughly £580 million in tariffs by the tenth year of its implementation, with nearly two-thirds of tariffs eliminated right after it comes into effect.
Various British sectors such as automobile, aerospace, electronics, and food and beverage are poised to gain from this deal. Goods including cereals, cheddar cheese, chocolate, and butter will enjoy tariff-free status in GCC markets.
In reciprocation, the UK has also lowered tariffs on GCC imports. Most oil and gas exports from Gulf nations were already entering the UK tariff-free.
The agreement prioritizes the services sector as well. British enterprises will maintain access to GCC markets without additional restrictions, while Gulf countries will acquire more opportunities to grow their service industries.
The UK government has assured that this deal will uphold British environmental standards and data protection norms. Additionally, it clarified that there are no provisions regarding human rights included in the agreement.
Britain’s Trade Minister Peter Kyle described this agreement as a potent affirmation of confidence amid global uncertainties. He noted that the UK stands as the first G7 nation to establish a modern trade agreement with the GCC bloc.
