A remarkable achievement was marked on Mount Everest as 274 climbers, including three Indians, reached the top from the Nepalese side within a single day. Nepalese officials have verified that this number stands as the largest ever to summit the world’s tallest peak in a 24-hour span using the southern route, overtaking the previous high of 223 set in 2019.
Clear weather played a pivotal role in this massive ascent, according to Nepal’s tourism officials and expedition coordinators, facilitating the climbers' journey to the summit at 8,848.86 meters. Each spring, Mount Everest—bordering Nepal and China’s Tibet—draws numerous adventurers, particularly during May’s climbing season. This year, China’s decision not to permit climbs on its side made Nepal’s southern route the primary choice for expeditions.
Among those reaching the summit were three climbers from India, joining the record-breaking cohort alongside mountaineers from various nations. This season saw close to 500 permits issued for Everest ascents, with a good number allocated to Indian teams. Officials noted that there is still potential for additional climbers to reach the summit before the season concludes later this month.
However, the influx of climbers raised alarm bells regarding overcrowding in Everest’s perilous “death zone,” where oxygen is scarce. Reports and visuals indicated lines of climbers awaiting their turn to summit. Nonetheless, experts from various expeditions highlighted that effective planning, favorable weather, and adequate oxygen supplies helped prevent major incidents on this record-breaking day.
In addition, numerous individual records emerged in this climbing season. Notably, renowned Nepali Sherpa Kami Rita Sherpa extended his own record by reaching Everest's summit for the 32nd time. Fellow climber Pasang Dawa Sherpa marked his 30th successful summit as well. Lhakpa Sherpa made history as the woman who has summited Everest the most times, achieving her 11th climb.
Despite facing extreme weather, high altitudes, and hazardous conditions, Mount Everest remains a premier challenge for climbers worldwide. The Nepalese government significantly benefits from millions in revenue earned through Everest climbing permits and tourism around the mountain. In response to recent events, officials are poised to deliberate on climber safety, management of crowds, and potential regulatory adjustments for upcoming expeditions.
