Controversy Erupts Over UI Student Chat Leak

Post by : Shakul

A significant uproar has emerged in Indonesia following the circulation of private chat messages purportedly from University of Indonesia students, triggering intense public outrage and highlighting ongoing concerns about sexual harassment within educational environments.

Online screenshots of a group chat involving 16 law students surfaced, revealing explicit content, inappropriate humor, and the objectification of female classmates and faculty members. The matter quickly became a trending topic on social media, resulting in widespread denunciation.

In light of the events, students organized a forum in Depok to voice their frustrations and demand responsibility from those implicated, many of whom are known to be affiliated with student organizations.

BEM UI, the university's student union, has called for rigorous measures, including ethical hearings and potential expulsions for those involved. They further encouraged the administration to investigate this incident alongside unresolved sexual violence allegations within the university.

In reaction, the institution confirmed that an internal investigation initiated by its anti-sexual violence task force is currently underway. Initial steps have included suspending the organizational memberships of several implicated students.

The administration confirmed that should any infractions be verified, disciplinary actions may extend to academic penalties, including expulsion. They also mentioned the potential involvement of law enforcement if criminal activities are uncovered during the probe.

This incident has rekindled a vital discussion on campus safety, the respect for gender, and the urgent need for improved measures to address and prevent sexual misconduct in academic settings.

Students and advocates are now demanding institutional reforms, more stringent policy enforcement, and enhanced awareness to cultivate safer campus environments for everyone.
