Al Ain: The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has introduced the groundbreaking Smart Mushroom House, designed to promote sustainable agricultural practices and bolster the country's food security objectives.
Situated at Al Foah Research Farm in Al Ain, this state-of-the-art facility integrates Internet of Things (IoT) technology to maintain an optimal environment for mushroom production. This project is in line with the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051, fostering a circular bioeconomy.
Developed by researchers from UAEU’s College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine under the ARIFSID initiative, the project emphasizes converting agricultural waste, particularly date palm residues, into nutrient-dense substrates for mushroom cultivation. Led by Dr. Shyam S. Kurup in collaboration with the University of Malaya’s Omex Laboratory, the project showcases innovative agricultural solutions.
The Smart Mushroom House is equipped with three advanced cultivation tents and a centralized incubator, allowing meticulous control of temperature, humidity, lighting, and ventilation, thus enabling simultaneous growth of various mushroom species under ideal conditions.
Capable of accommodating up to 600 cultivation bags per cycle, the facility processes about three tonnes of substrate, achieving 20–30% yield based on species variations. Current research includes diverse mushroom varieties such as oyster, lion’s mane, Ganoderma, turkey tail, and king oyster, alongside local endeavors to cultivate desert truffles known as Faqa or Zubaidi.
In addition to cultivation, the project investigates innovative uses of mushrooms, including mycelium-based foods, edible films, and transforming spent mushroom waste into nano-biochar, enhancing sustainable methodologies.
A significant aspect of this initiative is the development of local talent. The facility currently supports several research endeavors by Emirati students who are enhancing production methods tailored to the UAE’s climatic conditions. Their achievements are gaining recognition at national agriculture and sustainability forums.
As an educational hub, the Smart Mushroom House also provides training for students, farmers, and sustainability enthusiasts. By repurposing agricultural residues into food resources, it exemplifies a blend of smart technology, sustainability, and innovation.
With this project, UAEU aims to be at the vanguard of research-focused solutions addressing food security challenges in arid regions.
