Desperate Choices: Afghan Families Selling Daughters Amid Crisis

Post by : Shakul

Afghanistan is witnessing a deepening humanitarian emergency, compelling families to make gut-wrenching choices as widespread poverty, hunger, and soaring unemployment take hold.

In Ghor province, scores of men gather each morning, seeking employment in hopes of securing food for their loved ones. Unfortunately, many return to their families without any success after waiting for extended periods.

Numerous fathers shared their struggles with reporters, expressing the difficulty of feeding their children as drastic food shortages compound their desperation. Some stated that their kids have gone days without adequate meals.

One father, Abdul Rashid Azimi, revealed his painful consideration of selling one of his young daughters either for marriage or for domestic labor services to sustain the rest of the family. The heart-wrenching decision, he said, felt unavoidable.

Similarly, Saeed Ahmad disclosed that he had already made arrangements to give away his five-year-old daughter for monetary help towards her urgent medical surgery, as the family faced severe financial barriers.

The humanitarian situation has deteriorated primarily due to substantial cuts in international aid over the last two years, combined with dire drought conditions that heighten food insecurity, edging millions toward famine.

Healthcare professionals in provincial hospitals report a surge in child malnutrition and infant mortality rates. Medical teams observe overcrowded wards, medicinal shortages, and a growing number of malnourished infants in desperate need of care.

Aid organizations continue to highlight that without immediate humanitarian intervention, millions of Afghans are at risk as the economic crisis worsens across the nation.
