Post by : Bianca Suleiman

During the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships held in Hong Kong from May 28 to May 31, the UAE national athletics team concluded its campaign by clinching fourth place among 30 competing nations.

The championship showcased Asia’s budding elite talent, where the UAE team made a significant mark by earning six medals, comprising five gold medals and one bronze.

The medals table was topped by China, which amassed 25 medals, including 14 gold, 9 silver, and 2 bronze. India followed suit in second position with 18 medals: 9 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze. Japan secured third with a total of 17 medals, which included 5 golds, 5 silvers, and 7 bronzes.

Major General Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Mur, President of the UAE Athletics Federation, commended the team on their extraordinary achievement, emphasizing that fourth place is a remarkable result against such formidable competitors with high-level talent.

Dr. Al Mur pointed out that the UAE fielded only 10 athletes, both male and female, while other nations sent squads exceeding 50. This accomplishment is a testament to the UAE Federation’s successful training and developmental initiatives, fostering athletes capable of excelling on the Asian stage and beyond.

He further mentioned that such a commendable performance bolsters the federation's strategic plan to nurture talent via a structured pathway, from local Gulf and Arab competitions to continental championships and aspirational international events.

The UAE Athletics Federation leader congratulated all medalists for their commitment and perseverance in achieving a podium finish for the UAE. He also recognized the dedication and technical execution of the entire national team throughout the event.

The UAE’s recent achievements in Hong Kong illustrate the rising prominence of athletics within the nation and the promising future ahead for its young sportspersons.
