UAE Intensifies Crackdown on Piracy, Blocking 13,667 Websites in Q1 2026

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In the first quarter of 2026, the UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism successfully blocked 13,667 websites that were infringing copyright laws. This remarkable figure represents an increase of nearly 400% compared to the previous year.

Since the launch of the InstaBlock Lab in February 2025, the total number of blocked illegal websites has reached 47,667. The innovative AI-driven system continuously monitors digital platforms, enabling rapid responses to reports of copyright violations involving creative content and digital broadcasting.

Dr Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for the Intellectual Property Sector, emphasized that this initiative showcases the nation’s commitment to safeguarding intellectual property rights. He noted that these efforts contribute to creating a safe digital landscape that fosters innovation and enhances global competitiveness.

Collaborating with the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, the ministry partnered with several entities, including Abu Dhabi Media Network, MBC Shahid, OSN, Yango Play, STARZPLAY, the Brand Owner Council, and Nissan Middle East.

Enforcement efforts saw a significant increase during Ramadan, attributed to a surge in broadcast violations. The number of blocked websites during this sacred month surged from 62 in 2023 to 1,117 in 2024, 2,217 in 2025, and reached 5,677 in 2026.

In addition to enforcement, the ministry's campaign aimed to enhance public awareness regarding the importance of using licensed and official sources for digital content. These initiatives support the "We the UAE 2031" vision, which aims to bolster the knowledge-based economy and enhance the country’s international reputation in protecting digital content.
