UAE Unveils Initiative to Eradicate River Blindness

Post by : Shakul

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has initiated a transformative humanitarian effort aimed at combating river blindness, ultimately enhancing the lives of millions afflicted by this illness. This initiative was launched in Dubai, overseen by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives and executed through Noor Dubai. Officials indicate that this program is expected to provide direct aid to approximately seven million people, while indirectly benefiting over 35 million individuals in the next three years.

The launch took place during a significant meeting that included numerous senior members of Dubai's ruling family and leading government officials. Attendees featured Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Maktoum bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, and Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, alongside top healthcare and humanitarian representatives, underscoring the UAE’s commitment to global health initiatives and humanitarian aid.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid emphasized the importance of humanitarian efforts as a core value of the UAE, asserting that aiding individuals in restoring their health and dignity is a collective global duty. He stated that combating blindness also entails addressing suffering, disability, and poverty. He assured that the UAE will persist in launching humanitarian initiatives that uplift lives and assist vulnerable communities globally.

River blindness, scientifically known as onchocerciasis, is a severe ailment affecting eyes and skin, caused by parasitic worms that blackflies transmit. The disease can result in acute itching, skin lesions, visual degradation, and irreversible blindness without proper treatment. Frequently, affected individuals develop painful skin lumps, and early childhood infections can result in neurological issues, including epilepsy. This disease is predominantly seen in various regions of Africa and certain parts of Latin America and Asia.

Noor Dubai will oversee large-scale distribution of medicines for prevention and treatment under the new initiative. The organization will also carry out community health assessments and train local healthcare personnel to recognize early signs of infections. Officials noted that this program aligns with the global objective of completely eradicating river blindness by 2030, following the World Health Organization’s roadmap for neglected tropical diseases.

Recently, the UAE has played a pivotal role in fostering global awareness about neglected tropical diseases. World Neglected Tropical Disease Day, celebrated annually on January 30, received significant support from UAE diplomatic efforts before earning official recognition from the World Health Organization in 2021. The nation continues to invest significantly in international health programs through humanitarian associations and global collaborations.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, founded in 2015, currently administers over 30 humanitarian and development initiatives spanning various sectors, including healthcare, education, innovation, and disaster relief. Since its inception, the organization has reportedly delivered humanitarian aid valued in the billions of dirhams, assisting hundreds of millions globally. Noor Dubai alone has supported more than 33 million beneficiaries across Asia and Africa through its blindness prevention efforts, treatment programs, outreach campaigns, and mobile healthcare services.
