Typhoon Fung-wong battered northern parts of the Philippines on Sunday and Monday, with reports indicating at least eight fatalities and over 1.4 million individuals forced to flee their homes. The storm struck as the nation was still recovering from Typhoon Kalmaegi, resulting in extensive flooding, landslides, and widespread power outages across numerous provinces.
Locally referred to as Uwan, Fung-wong made landfall in Aurora province as a super typhoon, exhibiting sustained winds of up to 185 kph (115 mph) alongside gusts reaching 230 kph (143 mph). Although the storm weakened after moving inland, its heavy rain continued to pose a threat to northern provinces and Metro Manila.
Authorities reported several deaths due to landslides and flash floods. In Catanduanes, one individual drowned, while another lost their life due to a house collapse in Catbalogan city. In Nueva Vizcaya, three youngsters perished in various landslide incidents, and an elderly individual died in a mudslide in Barlig, Mountain Province. Two villagers were also killed by a landslide in Lubuagan, Kalinga province, with others reported missing.
Before the typhoon made landfall, more than 1.4 million residents sought safety in emergency shelters or with relatives, and approximately 318,000 remained in evacuation centers on Monday. Flooding impacted at least 132 villages, trapping some individuals on rooftops, while numerous homes and roads suffered damage from landslides.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had previously declared a state of emergency in response to the destruction from Typhoon Kalmaegi and the expected impact of Fung-wong. Schools and government offices were closed, and both air and sea travel were severely disrupted, with over 325 domestic flights and 61 international flights canceled, leaving more than 6,600 commuters stranded at ports.
As the storm moves towards Taiwan, authorities have cautioned that the risk from heavy rainfall remains. Relief operations, including rescue and disaster-response efforts, are ongoing to support impacted communities, restore electricity, and clear blocked routes.
The Philippines faces around 20 typhoons every year and is significantly vulnerable to other natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic activity. Fung-wong adds to a concerning pattern of severe weather events in the country, underscoring the critical need for enhanced disaster preparedness and response plans.
