The Philippines is currently facing the dire consequences of Super Typhoon Fung-Wong, which has left its mark after making landfall. This storm follows closely on the heels of Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left significant damage to central islands, forcing more than a million people to evacuate as entire communities are submerged.
Fung-Wong hit the eastern coastline on Sunday evening, uprooting vegetation, inundating towns, and disrupting electricity in various provinces. Its impact was felt across nearly the entirety of the country, with Cagayan, Catanduanes, and numerous regions in Luzon being the most severely affected.
In Cagayan, officials reported that the Chico River breached its banks, leading to urgent evacuations. Footage captured showed some individuals still stranded on rooftops as floodwaters rose dramatically. In Tuguegarao, located about 30 kilometers from the river, extensive flooding engulfed large areas.
Aurora province also experienced significant devastation. Landslides obstructed key routes, and many towns remained without power. “We were unable to respond last night due to severe rainfall and high water levels,” remarked a rescue worker based in Dipaculao town.
Samar province, still recovering from the earlier Typhoon Kalmaegi, reported its first confirmed casualty from Fung-Wong: a 64-year-old woman who drowned in Catbalogan City due to fierce winds and rainfall. Another death was recorded on Catanduanes island because of sudden flooding. Residents recounted storm surges that turned streets into turbulent rivers, severely affecting homes and places of worship.
The typhoon is now progressing toward Taiwan, where meteorologists predict up to 350 millimeters (14 inches) of rainfall could fall within a 24-hour period, prompting evacuations in at-risk regions. Experts are warning that climate change is exacerbating storm intensity worldwide, as warmer ocean temperatures and a humidity-rich atmosphere facilitate the rapid strengthening of typhoons.
Philippine authorities are actively engaged in recovery efforts, while President Ferdinand Marcos has extended the “state of national calamity” linked to Typhoon Kalmaegi for an entire year, emphasizing the ongoing humanitarian emergency.
The simultaneous effects of Typhoons Kalmaegi and Fung-Wong stress the mounting susceptibility of the Philippines to extreme weather, raising alarms about the resilience of infrastructure and the state of emergency readiness.
