In a groundbreaking diplomatic initiative, US President Donald Trump has extended his full backing to Syria after pivotal discussions with the nation's leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, signaling a notable transformation in Washington's stance toward the war-afflicted nation.
Sharaa’s visit to Washington, which marks the first occurrence of a Syrian president stepping foot in the U.S., was orchestrated six months after their initial encounter in Saudi Arabia, where dialogues regarding the potential easing of US sanctions began. The primary objective during Sharaa’s U.S. visit was to advocate for a comprehensive removal of the stringent sanctions imposed by the US in 2019, known as the Caesar Act. While Trump engaged with Sharaa behind closed doors, the U.S. Treasury also revealed a 180-day halting of the enforcement of these sanctions, although only Congress has the jurisdiction to fully eliminate the restrictions.
When addressing the media, Trump lauded Sharaa as a “strong leader,” expressing faith in his capability to lead Syria toward stability. “We’ll do everything we can to make Syria successful,” he stated, acknowledging Sharaa’s disputed history. “We’ve all had rough pasts,” he added.
The 43-year-old Sharaa assumed leadership last year following the overthrow of the longtime autocratic figure Bashar al-Assad by his rebel factions. Since gaining power, Sharaa has aimed to reframe Syria’s image on the global platform as a moderate entity striving for unity and reintegration with the international community. He emphasized Syria’s redirection away from traditional allies like Iran and Russia towards collaboration with Washington, Turkey, and Gulf states.
The Treasury’s recent declaration of “continued sanctions relief” follows a waiver on the Caesar Act enforcement that was issued on May 23, extending the suspension for an added 180 days. This decision reveals the US administration's readiness to assist Sharaa's transition while promoting reforms and security in Syria.
Discussions between the two leaders were anticipated to prioritize security and military cooperation. It has been reported that Washington is facilitating discussions regarding a potential security agreement between Syria and Israel, along with establishing a US military presence at a Damascus airbase to support the delicate transition.
Experts suggest that this meeting reflects a broader shift in US policy, perceiving Syria not as a menace but as a potential geopolitical partner in the Middle East. Despite the considerable challenges involved in reconstructing a nation ravaged by years of conflict, both leaders conveyed optimism regarding the future trajectory of US-Syria relations.
The landmark talks and the ongoing diplomatic process could represent a significant turning point for Syria, providing the nation with an opportunity to escape isolation and foster stronger relations with Washington and its allies.
