ICE Raid in Minnesota: U.S. Citizen Claims Harrowing Encounter

Post by : Mina Rahman

ChongLy Thao, a 56-year-old Minnesota resident, recounted feeling vulnerable and mortified after immigration officers invaded his home with weapons drawn, restrained him, and forced him into the cold outdoors in nothing but shorts and Crocs.

A naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Laos, Thao has been a resident of the U.S. since he was a child. On the evening of the incident, he was home when his front door was broken down. Despite his efforts to retrieve his ID, he was not permitted time to dress appropriately before being taken outside.

As the temperatures plummeted, Thao wrapped himself in a blanket belonging to his grandson, but the circumstances were challenging due to the cold and the handcuffs. Images of the event quickly spread across social media, igniting public concern and debate.

Thao described the experience as frightening and degrading. He expressed confusion over why he was singled out, asking, “Why me?” He also voiced fears about possibly being deported back to Laos, where he has no remaining family.

After a brief period in custody, he was returned home that same day without any apology or explanation from the authorities.

Officials indicated that the raid was part of a larger operation targeting convicted offenders, and Thao was briefly detained due to his initial non-compliance with identification requests.

The incident has elicited significant public outcry, particularly among civil rights organizations, who condemned the raid as excessive and unwarranted, emphasizing that U.S. citizens should not be subjected to such treatment.

Thao's family described the encounter as traumatic and distressing, raising crucial questions about citizens' rights amid immigration enforcement actions.

This case has sparked national discussions on the necessity for humane and respectful immigration enforcement, even within the framework of law enforcement.
