The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant addition to their pitching roster, locking in a three-year contract worth $30 million with right-hander Cody Ponce, according to reports.
Ponce, aged 31, recently completed an impressive season with the Hanwha Eagles in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), achieving a stunning 17-1 record along with a 1.89 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 252 strikeouts over 180.2 innings. His exceptional performance secured him the title of Most Valuable Player in the league.
Having last pitched in the Major Leagues for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021, where he appeared in 15 games with a 7.04 ERA over 38.1 innings, Ponce struggled in the MLB. However, his remarkable growth in the KBO has encouraged the Blue Jays to believe in his potential to replicate this success in their league.
Drafted in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, Ponce holds a career MLB record showing a 5.86 ERA with 48 strikeouts across 55.1 innings. This new agreement indicates Toronto's confidence in Ponce's experience and recent performance to fortify their pitching lineup for the forthcoming seasons.
