Lingering Tensions as India Gears Up for Raipur ODI

Post by : Mina Rahman

As the Indian cricket team gears up for the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur, the ongoing tension between Virat Kohli and Head Coach Gautam Gambhir continues to cast a shadow over preparations. Despite the cold atmosphere rumored to exist within the dressing room, Kohli and Rohit Sharma maintained their focus during an energetic practice session on Tuesday.

The two senior players batted in tandem against throw-down specialists, going through an intense training regimen under lights. Their sharp performances hinted that the off-field dynamics have little effect on their competitive spirit.

Gambhir observed the session closely from near the nets, adding to the focus surrounding him, especially since reports surfaced about national selector Pragyan Ojha being dispatched to Raipur to help alleviate stress within the team environment. This move was prompted by concerns regarding the communication barriers between Gambhir and the senior players.

After concluding his session, Kohli walked past Gambhir without a word while carrying two bats, while Rohit paused to engage with the coach. Their contrasting actions further fueled discussions about the relationship between the players and Gambhir.

Recent social media footage has pointed out that Kohli and Gambhir have had limited interactions. There was hope for reconciliation after Kohli announced his participation in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, yet signs indicate that the atmosphere at practice may still require mending.

Amid the uncertainties, both Kohli and Rohit appeared dedicated to their roles, unaffected by talks surrounding their future, particularly in view of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Kohli showcased excellent form, expertly timing deliveries even as throwdowns turned up the pace. Although a few deliveries challenged him, he predominantly dominated the session.

Other team members emulated a similar intensity during training. Yashasvi Jaiswal displayed remarkable power-hitting, consistently clearing the leg-side boundary, while Rishabh Pant was the final batter to complete the team's last workout ahead of the match.

India heads into the Raipur ODI holding a 1–0 advantage following a commendable victory in Ranchi. The black-soil pitch at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium is anticipated to foster another high-scoring duel, promising an exciting evening of cricket.
