10 Foods Recommended by AIIMS and Harvard Doctor to Combat Fatty Liver

Post by : Saif Nasser

Fatty liver has risen in prevalence, affecting even younger generations. Rapid lifestyles, reliance on fast foods, and neglecting dietary choices gradually harm the liver—one of the body's crucial organs responsible for blood filtration, digestion, and energy storage. The alarming accumulation of fat in the liver can give rise to significant health issues. However, with some dietary adjustments, improvements are achievable.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a renowned gastroenterologist from AIIMS with training in Harvard and Stanford, recently shared insights on social media regarding 10 foods that can nurture and protect the liver. He underscored how a nutritious diet can diminish inflammation, expel toxins, and eliminate excess fat deposited in the liver. His advice emphasizes that wholesome food plays a vital role in health.

Starting the list is extra virgin olive oil, enriched with beneficial fats and antioxidants that safeguard the liver while aiding in blood sugar management. This versatile oil is fantastic for cooking or as a salad enhancer. Next, Dr. Sethi points to berries such as blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries, which are packed with antioxidants beneficial for liver cell protection.

Avocados follow closely, as their healthy fats and fiber contribute to detoxification and reducing bad cholesterol levels. Walnuts are a noteworthy mention; just a handful daily provides omega-3 fatty acids that combat liver inflammation. Cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower, assist the body in disposing of harmful substances.

Oats make the list, appreciated for their fiber content, which improves digestion and minimizes liver fat accumulation. Regular consumption of green tea has proven effective in mitigating liver inflammation, while coffee supports liver health by lowering enzyme levels associated with fatty liver disease—good news for coffee aficionados.

For optimal protein intake, Dr. Sethi recommends plant-based options like tofu or tempeh over red meats, as these are gentler on the liver. The final entry is garlic, known to activate liver enzymes, enhancing detoxification and fat metabolism.

Dr. Sethi's insights underscore that even small daily dietary changes can significantly affect liver health. Managing fatty liver hinges not just on medications but also on lifestyle choices. Incorporating nutritious foods, maintaining regular physical activity, and curbing sugar and fried food consumption will promote liver recovery. Moreover, healthcare professionals advocate for moderating alcohol intake and managing body weight.

It’s vital to remember that health varies for each individual. Anyone considering these adjustments should consult a healthcare provider, especially if facing serious health challenges. In essence, prioritizing natural, fresh, and minimally processed foods can greatly foster lasting liver health.

This message serves as a crucial reminder about the liver’s silent role in our well-being, making it our duty to care for this essential organ. Adopting cleaner dietary choices is among the most effective means to ensure overall health for a lifetime.
