Vietnam's To Lam Commemorates Tree Planting in Singapore

Post by : Shakul

During his official visit to Singapore on May 30, Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam took part in a symbolic tree planting ceremony at the prestigious Singapore Botanic Gardens, hosted by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. This event underscored the strengthening ties and cooperation shared between the two nations in Southeast Asia.

The ceremony featured senior officials and representatives from both countries. Prior to planting the symbolic tree, President To Lam and Prime Minister Wong received insights into the Hopea recopei species and the historical importance of the chosen site within the garden.

This initiative demonstrated the mutual commitment of Vietnam and Singapore to environmental sustainability and ecological preservation, reflecting the robust diplomatic relationship that continues to flourish under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Set in the urban core of Singapore, the Botanic Gardens, established in 1859, is a revered landmark and has significantly contributed to botanical research and conservation across Southeast Asia over the past century.

The gardens are celebrated for their scientific contributions and stunning landscapes. In 2015, it became the first tropical botanical garden worldwide to earn UNESCO World Heritage status. Today, it attracts millions and serves as a critical hub for tropical plant studies.

Among its esteemed sections is the National Orchid Garden, which boasts the largest collection of tropical orchids globally. Since the late 1920s, Singapore has led in orchid hybridization and breeding, positioning itself as a leader in horticultural innovation.

The event also highlighted Singapore's enduring dedication to environmental protection, tracing back to 1963 with Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s tree-planting initiative. In spite of its high population density, Singapore has ingeniously woven greenery into its urban fabric, gaining acclaim as a “City in Nature.”
