The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand is taking decisive steps to safeguard a group of Thai minors who went abroad for a summer novice monk ordination program and subsequently found themselves embroiled in a legal investigation. Minister Nikorn Somklang confirmed that welfare protocols for all affected children have been finalized, and efforts are now focused on their safe return and sustainable rehabilitation.
The ministry reported that these children, aged four to fifteen, were detained in early April while abroad. In response to the situation, the Thai Immigration Bureau alerted the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security to request immediate protective measures for the legal rights and welfare of these minors. Authorities moved swiftly to collaborate with provincial offices and child protection agencies to launch necessary assistance initiatives.
Investigations led by Minister Nikorn Somklang revealed that the majority of the children held valid travel documents. The screening process conducted through Thailand’s National Referral Mechanism indicated that none were identified as victims of human trafficking, which allowed the authorities to proceed with reintegration and family support efforts.
Children who have returned to Thailand are now under the care of Provincial Children and Family Shelters. Officials are in close communication with parents and guardians to evaluate family readiness and establish secure custody arrangements. Social workers are also engaging in home visits and ongoing monitoring to ensure the children receive adequate emotional support and protection post-return.
A few children remain abroad without passports, temporarily serving as witnesses in continuing legal cases. Thai authorities anticipate their return by June 2026 upon case resolution, while ensuring their safety, welfare, and legal rights are upheld in collaboration with foreign counterparts.
The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has introduced comprehensive case management plans targeting education, healthcare, family welfare, and financial aid. Preparations are being made to coordinate with educational institutions before the children's return, ensuring a smooth transition back into their studies. Health evaluations, counseling, and temporary shelter provisions are also being arranged during the rehabilitation phase.
Minister Nikorn reiterated Thailand's commitment to enhancing child protection frameworks and fostering international partnerships to effectively address cross-border child welfare scenarios in the future. The aim is to implement strong safeguards for children involved in overseas activities and provide families with ongoing social and economic support as necessary.
