Thailand is taking significant steps to enhance its regional air connectivity, focusing on increasing flights to local airports. The initiative is part of the government’s strategy to invigorate tourism and economic activity in less-traveled cities across the nation.
Deputy Minister of Transport, Phatarapong Pataraprasit, convened a meeting with senior aviation leaders and members of the Thai Airlines Association to discuss support strategies for airlines operating in regional airspaces supervised by the Department of Airports.
The government aims to unlock the full potential of various airports positioned in northern, northeastern, and southern regions of Thailand, which have recently enhanced capacity to accommodate increased passenger volumes and flights. Officials believe that improving regional air links will facilitate a more equitable distribution of tourism revenue throughout the country.
During the meeting, Phatarapong encouraged airlines to introduce both domestic and global routes, comprising regular and charter options. He emphasized that enhancing flight access would make travel more convenient for the public and promote economic development in smaller locales.
The Department of Airports pointed to previous successes stemming from aviation promotion initiatives launched in 2025, which saw several airlines, including Thai Lion Air, Thai Vietjet Air, and Thai AirAsia, initiating new routes to cities such as Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Buriram, and Narathiwat.
Currently, officials are weighing the possibility of extending these promotional initiatives and introducing additional support for international air routes. Plans are also in discussion to upgrade airport facilities and lower operating costs for airlines to stimulate higher passenger demand from both local and international travelers.
The meeting further addressed the ramifications of ongoing tensions in the Middle East on the aviation sector. To alleviate the operational pressures faced by airlines during these challenging times, Airports of Thailand has announced a 50% reduction in aircraft parking fees at its airports for a six-month period starting June 1, 2026.
Officials reiterated the government’s dedication to fortifying Thailand’s aviation industry while ensuring air travel remains affordable and accessible, fostering tourism, trade, and regional economic upliftment.
