Thailand is advancing efforts to modernize and enhance the safety of its railway infrastructure following a visit by Deputy Minister of Transport Siripong Angkasakulkiat to the State Railway of Thailand Electrified Train Company Limited. The visit allowed him to assess operations and deliver new policy guidance.
Taking place at Bangkok Central Station, the deputy minister engaged with executives and staff from the Red Line suburban electric train operator. The government reiterated its commitment to developing a transport system that is contemporary, efficient, secure, and poised to facilitate future economic expansion.
In discussions, Siripong underscored the effectiveness of the government’s flat-rate travel initiative. This program enables travelers to utilize EMV contactless bank cards for affordable train fares, with usage having surged over 106 percent since its launch in December 2025.
In response to growing passenger demand, the Ministry of Transport directed the State Railway of Thailand to collaborate with Krung Thai Bank to increase the availability of EMV access points at stations. The aim is for the Red Line to serve as a benchmark for modern public transport in Thailand.
Emphasizing operational safety and enhanced service quality, the deputy minister called for greater integration of technology and innovation. He acknowledged the critical role of rail transport in alleviating traffic congestion, decreasing air pollution, and aiding Thailand's transition towards its net-zero emissions goal by 2050.
SRT Electrified Rail Company is set to launch a new initiative dubbed the “Year of Omotenashi Service,” which will prioritize exceptional hospitality and compliance with global safety standards for all passengers. Plans are also underway to upgrade feeder transport systems connecting Red Line stations with surrounding areas, utilizing EV buses and diesel rail service.
Additionally, the railway operator is preparing to implement a smart monitoring platform under the title “The Smart Railway Ecosystem.” This project, developed in partnership with King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, will leverage embedded technologies within trains to monitor tracks and electrical systems in real time, enhancing maintenance efficiency.
Officials revealed that the company will continue to provide updates on safety enhancements, passenger services, and operational advancements as Thailand aims to establish a faster, cleaner, and more dependable rail network for the populace.
